Men's Mental Health Month: Why Hypnotherapy Is the Tool Nobody's Talking About
Every June, the conversation about men's mental health gets a little louder. Social media fills up with reminders to “check on your mates”. Workplaces share wellbeing resources. Podcasts run specials. Then July arrives and we go back to normal.
Awareness matters. It genuinely does. The problem is that awareness isn't the same as actually getting help.
For most men, the gap between knowing you're struggling and doing something about it is enormous.
I see this in my work every week. Men who have been white knuckling it for months, sometimes years, before they finally pick up the phone. Men who've tried the GP, been put on a waiting list, done a bit of Googling and ended up more confused than when they started. Men who would never describe themselves as someone who needs therapy but who are absolutely at the end of their rope.
So this blog, I want to talk about something that doesn't come up enough in the men's mental health conversation: hypnotherapy.
What it actually is, why it works differently to traditional talking therapy and why more men than you might think are quietly booking sessions and getting on with their lives.
Why Men Struggle to Ask for Help
Let's not pretend this is a mystery.
Men are brought up, in most cases, to equate asking for help with weakness. To push through. To sort it out. To not make a fuss.
The result is that by the time most men reach out, they're not just a bit stressed.
They're exhausted, irritable, not sleeping, probably drinking more than they'd like and struggling in ways that are starting to affect their relationships and their work.
There's also the issue of not knowing what getting help actually looks like.
Sitting in a room talking about your feelings for an hour sounds, to a lot of men, like their idea of hell.
Which is completely fair. Not everyone processes things that way,and there's no rule that says you have to.
This is where hypnotherapy is different.
What Hypnotherapy Actually Is (and Isn't)
Let's get the obvious stuff out of the way.
You won't be clucking like a chicken. You won't be unconscious. You won't be made to do anything against your will. Stage hypnosis is entertainment. Clinical hypnotherapy is something else entirely.
In a hypnotherapy session, you're guided into a deeply relaxed state, similar to that half-asleep feeling you get just before you drift off at night. You're aware of everything. You're in control the whole time. What changes is that in this relaxed state, your brain becomes much more open to new patterns of thinking.
Think of it this way. Your brain has spent years running the same programmes. Worry. Rumination. Avoidance. Anger. Whatever your particular version of struggling looks like. Those patterns are deeply grooved in. Willpower alone can't shift them because willpower operates at the conscious level, and those patterns live much deeper than that.
Hypnotherapy works at the level where those patterns are stored and can actually be changed.
It's not magic. It's neuroscience. It's practical.
Why It Works Well for Men
Here's something I've noticed working with male clients: they tend to respond brilliantly to hypnotherapy precisely because it doesn't require them to analyse and talk through every emotion they've ever had.
The sessions are structured. There's a clear process. You don't have to explain yourself in detail or find the right words for something you can't articulate. You just have to show up and let the session do the work.
Men who've spent years telling themselves to just get on with it often find that hypnotherapy does exactly that.
It gets on with it, without the drawn out process they were dreading.
Results tend to come faster than with traditional talking therapies too.
Most clients notice a meaningful shift within the first few sessions.
Not because hypnotherapy is a magic wand, but because it goes straight to the source rather than working around it.
What Men Actually Contact Me For
In case you're wondering whether any of this applies to you, here's what the men I work with are dealing with:
Sleep. Not being able to switch off. Lying awake at 2am with the same thoughts running on a loop.
Waking up exhausted and doing it all again.
Anger and irritability. Snapping at the people they love. Feeling on edge all the time. Not knowing why.
(This one is often anxiety that hasn't been recognised as anxiety.)
Stress and burnout. Running on empty. The feeling that everything is effort and nothing is enjoyable anymore.
Phobias. Flying, needles, heights, driving. Practical problems that are getting in the way of life.
Alcohol and substances. Using drinking or smoking weed to wind down, sleep, or just get through the week, and knowing, deep down, that it's become a crutch.
Confidence. Imposter syndrome. Dread around public speaking or high-stakes situations. Not feeling like yourself.
Anxiety. Sometimes named, sometimes not. Sometimes showing up as physical symptoms, chest tightness, a constant low-level hum of dread, difficulty concentrating.
None of these things make you broken. All of them respond well to the right kind of support.
Does It Work Online?
Yes, absolutely. This is one of the questions I get asked most often and the answer is straightforward: online hypnotherapy sessions are just as effective as face to face ones.
The reason is that hypnotherapy works through relaxation and guided suggestion.
Your brain doesn't care whether the voice it's listening to is in the same room or coming through your headphones.
What matters is that you're comfortable, somewhere you won't be disturbed and willing to engage with the process.
Many clients actually prefer working online.
There's no commute, no unfamiliar room to navigate, no parking to worry about.
You're in your own space, which for a lot of people makes it easier to relax and get the most out of the session.
I work with clients all over the UK and worldwide.
If you can speak English, I can work with you.
My furthest client to date has been in Australia, so wherever you are, distance is no barrier.
Men's Mental Health Month Matters, but What Comes Next Matters More
Awareness campaigns are important. They can also create a kind of pressure that's counterproductive.
If you spend a whole month hearing “it's okay to talk” and you still can't quite bring yourself to do it, that doesn't feel good.
So here's something more concrete.
If you've been struggling, you don't have to call it “mental health” if that word doesn't sit right with you.
You don't have to commit to months of therapy.
You don't have to explain everything in your first session.
You just have to book one appointment and see how it feels.
Most of the men who see me tell me, afterwards, that they wish they'd done it sooner.
Not because the process was dramatic or life changing in one go, but because they realised it was far less of a big deal than they'd built it up to be in their heads.
The other side of it, sleeping better, feeling calmer, not snapping at people, was absolutely worth it.
Sessions are online, so it doesn't matter where in the world you are.
If you can speak English, we can work together.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is hypnotherapy suitable for men who are sceptical about it? Yes, and actually sceptics often make the best clients. You don't need to believe in hypnotherapy for it to work. You just need to be willing to try it with an open mind. The relaxation response that makes hypnotherapy effective is a physiological process, not a matter of faith.
How many sessions will I need? Most clients start to notice a meaningful shift between six to twelve sessions, though this varies depending on what you're working on. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is designed to be relatively brief compared to traditional counselling. You won't be coming indefinitely.
Will I have to talk about my past or childhood? No. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is forward focused. The sessions are about where you want to get to, not dissecting where you've been. You won't be asked to revisit painful memories or talk through things you'd rather leave alone.
Can I do hypnotherapy online if I've never tried it before? Absolutely. Online sessions work just as well as in person, even for first-timers. Many people find it easier to relax in their own home, which actually makes the process more effective. All you need is a quiet space, a comfortable chair or sofa and a phone or laptop.
What if I can't be hypnotised? This is a very common concern, and the reassuring answer is that almost everyone can enter a relaxed hypnotic state. It's not a special talent or something that only works on certain people. If you can daydream, you can be hypnotised. The depth of relaxation varies from person to person, but even a light state is enough for the work to be effective.
Is it confidential? Completely. Everything discussed in sessions is confidential. I'm bound by a professional code of ethics through my registration with the NCH. The only exceptions are the standard safeguarding situations that apply across all health professions.
I don't live in the UK. Can I still work with you? Yes. All sessions are online, which means location is no barrier at all. I work with clients across the UK and worldwide. My furthest client to date has been in Australia. If you can speak English, we can work together.
