Equestrian coaching for confidence

Has Fear Taken the Reins?

You used to love riding.
The freedom, the partnership with your horse, the thrill of improving together.
But somewhere along the way, something changed.

Perhaps it was a fall. Maybe a spook that shook you.
Or perhaps the anxiety crept in gradually, without any obvious cause.

Now you might find yourself:

  • Making excuses to avoid riding

  • Feeling sick with nerves before you even reach the yard

  • Tensing up in the saddle (and your horse knows it)

  • Sticking to "safe" activities when you dream of doing more

  • Wondering if you'll ever feel confident again

  • Constantly anticipating something going wrong while riding

  • Struggling to relax in the saddle

  • Feeling physically anxious before lessons or competitions

  • Avoiding things you used to enjoy with your horse

  • Feeling frustrated that your riding confidence has changed

  • Maybe you avoid hacking alone now.

  • Maybe cantering your horse suddenly feels overwhelming.

  • Maybe your confidence changed after a fall or maybe it slowly disappeared over time.

You're not alone and this doesn't have to be your story forever.

And one of the hardest parts?

You often know you’re capable.
But your nervous system reacts as though horse riding is dangerous anyway.

This is far more common than many horse riders realise.

Why Horse Riding Anxiety Can Feel So Powerful

The brain is designed to protect you.

When something feels emotionally significant such as a fall, loss of control, fear, stress or repeated anxious anticipation the primitive survival part of the brain can begin associating horse riding with danger.

This creates an automatic fear response that can feel immediate and irrational.

The primitive brain reacts faster than the intellectual thinking brain, which is why fear often happens before logic has chance to step in.

You might know logically that you’re safe… but your body reacts differently.

For horse riders and equestrians, this can look like:

  • freezing in the saddle

  • physical tension and bracing

  • panic during transitions

  • hyper-vigilance while hacking

  • overthinking your horse’s behaviour

  • struggling to stay present while riding

Because horses are highly sensitive to tension and physiological changes, anxiety can quickly become a cycle between horse and rider.

The issue is not weakness or lack of ability.

Your brain is trying to protect you and it has simply become overprotective.

How Horse Riding Confidence Hypnotherapy Can Help

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works by helping reduce anxiety levels, calm the overactive threat response and strengthen more positive subconscious patterns.

The goal is not to “force confidence.”

The goal is to help your mind and body stop reacting as though horse riding is unsafe every time you get on.

Sessions can help with:

  • horse riding anxiety

  • nervous horse riding

  • confidence after a fall

  • fear of cantering or jumping

  • hacking confidence

  • equestrian competition nerves

  • horse rider panic attacks

  • anticipatory anxiety before riding

  • overthinking while riding

  • fear around spooking or bolting

  • returning to horse riding after time away

  • rebuilding trust in yourself

and so much more… drop me a message to explore!

This work is collaborative, supportive and forward focused.
We focus on helping you create calmer, safer patterns not endlessly reliving difficult experiences.

How We Work

In Solution Focused Hypnotherapy we focus on reducing the overall anxiety load on the nervous system and as stress levels reduce, the intellectual part of the brain is able to stay more present and in control.

Sessions may include:

  • psychoeducation around how the brain responds to fear

  • reducing anxiety and stress accumulation

  • calming subconscious threat responses

  • positive mental rehearsal

  • strengthening calmer neural pathways

  • guided hypnosis and trance work

The trance state allows the brain to practise calmer responses and create new patterns through neuroplasticity.

Imagine Enjoying Horse Riding Again Without Constant Anticipation

  • getting on your horse without the knot in your stomach

  • feeling calmer in lessons

  • hacking out without panic

  • trusting yourself after a spook

  • sitting softer instead of bracing

  • feeling calmer, safer and more connected to your horse

  • staying present instead of trapped in “what if” thinking

Frequently Asked Questions

Can hypnotherapy really help with horse riding anxiety?
Yes and it works particularly well for riders because riding anxiety is driven by the subconscious threat response, not logic. You can know rationally that you're safe, and still feel terrified. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works directly with the subconscious part of the brain that's generating the fear, rather than trying to reason with it from the outside. Many riders find that after just a few sessions, they begin to feel noticeably calmer in the saddle not because they've pushed through the fear, but because the fear response itself has started to reduce.

What if I don't know why I lost my confidence?
This is more common than you might think. You don't need a dramatic incident to lose your riding confidence it can happen gradually through a build-up of smaller moments, increased life stress, time away from riding, or simply a period when things felt uncertain. The good news is that Solution Focused Hypnotherapy doesn't require you to identify a specific cause. We work with where you are now and where you want to be, not with digging back through what went wrong.

Will I have to relive my fall or the moment I lost confidence?
No and this is one of the things that makes Solution Focused Hypnotherapy different. We don't revisit or relive difficult experiences. Instead, sessions focus forward on how you want to feel, how you want to ride, and building the calmer, more confident patterns you're looking for. Many clients find this approach a relief, especially those who've been dreading having to talk through what happened.

How many sessions will I need?
Most riders begin to notice a shift within 6-8 sessions, though this varies depending on how long the anxiety has been present and what's driving it. We review progress regularly and work at a pace that feels right for you. Some clients come for a focused block of sessions; others continue for longer as they work towards specific goals like competitions or returning to jumping.

Do you offer online sessions for riders outside Derbyshire? Yes all sessions are available online via video call, which means I work with riders across the UK. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person and have the added benefit of allowing you to be in your own comfortable, familiar space. If you're local to Derbyshire or Nottinghamshire, you're also welcome to attend my studio in Risley.

What's the difference between your 1:1 sessions and the group rider confidence sessions? The 1:1 sessions are tailored entirely to you your specific anxiety, your riding history, your goals. They go deeper and move faster because everything is personalised. The group outdoor sessions are a wonderful introduction to rider confidence work combining psychoeducation, relaxation and hypnosis in a supportive group environment with other riders who understand exactly what you're going through. Many riders do both: the group session to get started, and 1:1 sessions to go deeper.
