Stop Smoking Hypnotherapy in Derbyshire: What To Expect
What to Expect with Quit Smoking Hypnotherapy
Most people book this without any real idea of what they are walking into.
They have seen hypnosis on the telly, they have heard someone at work swear by it, and they have a vague sense that they will go under and wake up not wanting a cigarette. That is not what happens, and knowing what does happen makes the whole thing considerably easier.
So this is the full walkthrough of a stop smoking hypnotherapy session in Derbyshire. Where it is, how long you are there, what I will ask you, what the hypnosis part is actually like, and what the days afterwards look like.
No mystique. You will book with a much better idea of what you are paying for.
Where the sessions are
In person sessions are near Long Eaton in Derbyshire, DE72.
It is a straightforward run from Derby, Nottingham, Ilkeston, Beeston, Sandiacre, Draycott, Breaston and Borrowash, and it is close enough to the M1 and the A52 that people come from a good deal further out than that without it being a project.
Most of my practice is online, so I should explain why this one is different. Stopping smoking is the session I most like doing face to face. There is something about being in the room for this particular piece of work that I prefer, so I offer both and I am happy either way.
What the room is like
Ordinary and comfortable. A sofa you can properly sink back into, warm, quiet, nothing clinical and nothing theatrical.
No swinging watch and no ‘woo’.
Online sessions run on Microsoft Teams and are the same session in every respect. Same length, same structure, same recording. Plenty of people go deeper at home than they would in a room they have never been in before, which is a fair point, and if the drive is the thing standing between you and doing this, take the online option rather than not doing it.The other part of the brain, the one that gets there first
Underneath the reasoning part sits something much older and much faster, and its job is to keep you alive and to run anything you do often enough that it can be automated.
It does not deliberate.
It does not weigh up the pros and cons. It pattern matches and it acts.
This is the part that has learned, over however many years, that a particular moment goes with a particular action.
The kettle. The car. The pub garden. The phone call from that one person.
By the time the reasoning part of your mind has caught up and started assembling the argument about your lungs and your children and how much this costs a month, the cigarette is already lit.
That is what people are describing when they say "it was in my hand before I knew what I was doing".
It is not a figure of speech. Two different systems are involved, and the faster one moved first.
1 ) The discovery call
Nobody books a session with me without a conversation first.
The discovery call is free, thirty minutes and it happens before you have paid anything.
It is not a sales pitch. It is me finding out what has been going on, you asking whatever you want to ask, and both of us working out whether this is the right thing.
If I do not think it is, I will tell you on that call rather than take your money.
2) Picking your date
You choose a date that gives you a run at it. Avoid the day before a wedding, a stag do or your most stressful week at work.
Then and this is the bit that surprises everyone, you carry on smoking normally right up to the session.
There is no benefit in white knuckling a fortnight of cutting down first. All that does is get you here exhausted and irritable, which makes the session harder rather than easier. Some people have their last cigarette in the car outside. That is completely fine.
3) The Preparation
I ask you a few questions in preparation beforehand via whatsapp so I know more about what your triggers are, your reasonings for wanting to quit which allows me to build out your session,.
Before you arrive,
Easy as 1, 2, 3.
On the day
How long you are there
Between 90 minutes to 2 hours.
So, leave the afternoon or the evening free rather than booking something an hour afterwards.
You will come out relaxed.
Quite a few people say they did not want to drive straight off, so have a little sit in their car for a few moments after.
The first half, which is talking
This is the part people do not expect to be half the session and it is the part that makes the second half work.
We start with how the brain forms and holds a habit, in plain English.
Not because you need a neuroscience lecture, but because understanding what is actually happening takes an enormous amount of shame out of it.
Most people arrive carrying years of quietly believing they are weak.
Then we map your triggers.
Not a generic list of stress and socialising. Yours.
The specific moments, rooms, people, times of day and feelings that put a cigarette in your hand.
People are often surprised by how precisely they can name them once someone asks properly.
Then we build the other side of it.
What you want your life to look like without smoking, in real detail.
What is different in six months, what you are doing, what you stop thinking about.
A brain aimed at something it wants behaves very differently to a brain being told what it can no longer have and that picture is what we work with.
The second half, which is hypnosis
You get comfortable and close your eyes. I talk. You listen.
That is genuinely most of it.
Your body relaxes considerably further than most people expect, and the state itself is pleasant.
A lot of people tell me afterwards it is the most relaxed they have felt in years, which is worth having on its own.
You are not asleep. You are not unconscious.
You can hear me throughout, you can speak, you can shift in the chair, and you can open your eyes whenever you want to.
Nobody has ever been stuck, because there is nothing to be stuck in.
It is a state you drop into naturally several times a day already as part of your brains natural processes.
I am not going to make you cluck like a chicken.
That is stage hypnosis, with a volunteer who has agreed in advance to play along in front of an audience and it has very little to do with a therapy room.
Coming out of it
Gradually and you will know exactly where you are.
Most people stretch, blink, and are surprised at how much time has gone.
Some people feel a bit spaced for ten minutes, in a pleasant way floaty cloud nine way.
Some feel immediately sharp. Both are normal.
What happens afterwards
You get an audio recording to take away and use at home over the following days.
It keeps reinforcing the work while everything settles and it is particularly useful in the first couple of weeks.
You can message me.
I do not disappear the moment the payment clears.
If something comes up in week two, tell me about it rather than deciding on your own that it has not worked.
That matters more than people realise.
One cigarette does not undo a session.
What undoes it is the thought that follows, the one that says well, that is that ruined.
Having somewhere to take that thought is half the value of the follow up.
What it costs
£250 for the session, in person or online.
That covers the preparation beforehand, the session itself, your own audio recording to keep, and message support afterwards.
Payment is taken before the session.
There is no package waiting behind it and no block of six.
It is built as one session.
Who you would be working with
I am Emma Fogg and I run Next Chapter Hypnotherapy from Derbyshire.
I came to this as a client first. Hypnotherapy changed something for me that I had spent a long time assuming was just my personality, and a few years later I retrained so I could do it for other people.
I hold a Diploma in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy and a practitioner diploma from a 300+ hour practical training course, which is the level of qualification the NHS lists as essential on its Solution Focused Hypnotherapist job adverts, and which qualifies me for CNHC registration.
In August 2026 I was named Best Alternative Therapy Provider at the Business Awards UK Health and Wellbeing Awards.
More usefully than any of that, I am not going to lecture you about smoking.
You have probably had plenty of that already.
Being honest about what it can and cannot do
What the session does is work on the automatic associations that put a cigarette in your hand before you have consciously decided anything.
For a lot of people that is the piece that has been missing, because it is the piece willpower cannot reach.
Hypnotherapy can carry a lot of it but it is not mind control.
It cannot carry all of it. You still have to walk past the cig shop, work collaboratively with me and do your ‘homework’.
Frequently asked questions about Quitting Smoking with Hypnosis
Where in Derbyshire are the sessions?
Near Long Eaton, DE72. It is an easy run from Derby, Nottingham, Ilkeston, Beeston, Sandiacre, Draycott, Breaston and Borrowash.
How long does a stop smoking hypnotherapy session take?
Ninety minutes to two hours, as a single session.
Leave yourself some space afterwards rather than booking something straight after.
Do I have to come in person, or can I do it online?
Either. In person is my preference for this particular session, but online on Microsoft Teams is the same session with the same structure and the same recording, and it works perfectly well.
If the drive is the only thing stopping you, take the online option.
Can I drive home afterwards?
Yes. You are fully aware and in control throughout and afterwards.
Most people just like a few minutes before setting off, because they are more relaxed than they were when they arrived.
Will you know if I have smoked before I get there?
I will not mind either way.
Most people have their final cigarette in the car on the way to me and have binned the rest of them already as their first mental commitment to the process.
How soon can I get an appointment?
I do work on a waitlist basis, but usually within a week or two.
Message me and I will tell you what I have.
